<p><span class="fusion-dropcap dropcap">B</span>ed bugs are more than a nuisance. They can also create <a href="https://www.webmd.com/skin-problems-and-treatments/bedbugs-infestation">health hazards for humans</a> and pets.</p>
<p>The most challenging part of dealing with a bed bug problem is they are very difficult to see because of their size. On a good day, one of the little creatures could be smaller than a pencil eraser. They are also great little hiders that are able to find refuge in the smallest of cracks and crevices. Oh, they love to create their homes in mattresses/bedding and furniture cushions. Hence, the name &#8220;bed bugs.&#8221;</p>
<p>Since they reproduce quickly and can create serious health hazards, you can&#8217;t live with them. You have to take steps to get rid of them as soon as you know they exist. To help you in that endeavour, here are seven (7) tips for eradicating bed bugs. Note: These tips are listed in order to represent how bug extermination from a professional exterminator like Exterminateurs Associés might be considered a last resort option.</p>

Find the 1nfestation Area or Areas</strong></h2></h2></div><div class="fusion-text fusion-text-2"><p>Initially, it will be very difficult for you to realize bedbugs have come home to roost in your home. When they first arrive, they are very good about hiding their whereabouts as they set up home. The first sign you have a bed bud problem might well be when they start biting you or your family members.</p>
<p>When you get that first indication the bugs are among you, you need to find out where they are nesting. There are two signs for which you can be looking. First, you should be looking for larger concentrations of bugs. That&#8217;s a good indication the nest is nearby. Second, these little nuisances will give out a &#8220;musky&#8221; odour when there is a large concentration of them in a small area.</p>
<p>Areas of concern would be baseboards, furniture cushions, under the mattress, electrical outlets, areas of concentrated trash (stack of newspapers, etc.), and wall and furniture cracks.</p>
</div><div class="fusion-clearfix"></div></div></div></div></div><div class="fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-4 nonhundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling" style="--awb-border-radius-top-left:0px;--awb-border-radius-top-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-left:0px;--awb-flex-wrap:wrap;" ><div class="fusion-builder-row fusion-row"><div class="fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-3 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last" style="--awb-bg-size:cover;"><div class="fusion-column-wrapper fusion-column-has-shadow fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy"><div class="fusion-title title fusion-title-2 fusion-sep-none fusion-title-text fusion-title-size-two" style="--awb-margin-top-small:0px;--awb-margin-right-small:0px;--awb-margin-bottom-small:20px;--awb-margin-left-small:0px;"><h2 class="fusion-title-heading title-heading-left" style="margin:0;"><h2><strong>2. Containment</strong></h2></h2></div><div class="fusion-text fusion-text-3"><p>After you figure out the source or sources of the problem, you need to contain it and prevent it from getting worse. Remember, these bugs reproduce very quickly. A small, manageable problem can very quickly turn into a huge infestation.</p>
<p>Your containment efforts should include vacuuming up infested areas and cleaning all surfaces and materials that are connected with the infested area. Everything you can identify as infected should be sealed in plastic bags until discarded or washed. You would want and need to toss all vacuum cleaner bags and dispose of anything you don&#8217;t really need.</p>
</div><div class="fusion-clearfix"></div></div></div></div></div><div class="fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-5 nonhundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling" style="--awb-border-radius-top-left:0px;--awb-border-radius-top-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-left:0px;--awb-flex-wrap:wrap;" ><div class="fusion-builder-row fusion-row"><div class="fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-4 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last" style="--awb-bg-size:cover;"><div class="fusion-column-wrapper fusion-column-has-shadow fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy"><div class="fusion-title title fusion-title-3 fusion-sep-none fusion-title-text fusion-title-size-two" style="--awb-margin-top-small:0px;--awb-margin-right-small:0px;--awb-margin-bottom-small:20px;--awb-margin-left-small:0px;"><h2 class="fusion-title-heading title-heading-left" style="margin:0;"><div>
<div>
<h2><strong>3.</strong> <strong>Clean-Up in Preparation for Treatment</strong></h2>
</div>
</div></h2></div><div class="fusion-text fusion-text-4"><p>After addressing the source of the problem and containing it, you need to get ready to treat infested areas. That should include putting away books, papers, clothes that are lying around, disposing of all trash, and removing loose items from infested areas.</p>
<p>After doing the initial cleanup, you should consider sealing cracks (floor, ceiling, wallpaper, furniture), sealing up of electrical outlets (favourite bedbug hiding place), and moving all furniture, especially your bed or beds, at least six inches away from any walls and other furniture. This will prevent the bugs from being able to climb on cleaned furniture.</p>
</div><div class="fusion-clearfix"></div></div></div></div></div><div class="fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-6 nonhundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling" style="--awb-border-radius-top-left:0px;--awb-border-radius-top-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-left:0px;--awb-flex-wrap:wrap;" ><div class="fusion-builder-row fusion-row"><div class="fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-5 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last" style="--awb-bg-size:cover;"><div class="fusion-column-wrapper fusion-column-has-shadow fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy"><div class="fusion-title title fusion-title-4 fusion-sep-none fusion-title-text fusion-title-size-two" style="--awb-margin-top-small:0px;--awb-margin-right-small:0px;--awb-margin-bottom-small:20px;--awb-margin-left-small:0px;"><h2 class="fusion-title-heading title-heading-left" style="margin:0;"><h2><strong>4. </strong><b>Deep Clean All Applicable Furniture Bug</b></h2></h2></div><div class="fusion-text fusion-text-5"><p>If you are going to attempt to eradicate bed bugs on your own, it&#8217;s best to try non-chemical options first. That is going to require deep cleaning of everything in areas where you saw at least one bug.</p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Hint</span>: Bedbugs do not like extremely hot and cold conditions. You can kill them at hot temperatures of at least 115°F and cold temperatures below 32°F.</p>
<p>Here are a few deep cleaning suggestions to eliminate these bugs:</p>
<ul>
<li>Wash clothes and bedding materials in hot water with detergent for 30 minutes, subsequently drying everything at hot heat</li>
<li>On hot days above 95°F, you can sit furniture and contaminated items outside all day long</li>
<li>Put bags of contaminated items in the freezer at 0°F temperatures for at least four days</li>
<li>Steam clean furniture, flooring, and walls with hot steam and cleaning chemicals</li>
</ul>
<p>If you decide to try chemicals and insecticides, we would recommend the following: Pyrethrins and pyrethroids, pyrroles like chlorfenapyr, neonicotinoids nicotine), desiccants, and perhaps foggers and bug bombs. Note: Be wary of using chemicals that are harmful to humans.</p>

To Eradicate Bed Bugs, Eliminate Possible Hiding Places</strong></h2>
<h2></h2></h2></div><div class="fusion-text fusion-text-6"><p><img decoding="async" class="alignright wp-image-4058 " src="https://www.exterminateursassocies.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/AdobeStock_432422112-scaled.jpeg" alt="Tips-for-eradicating-bed-bugs" width="380" height="253" srcset="https://www.exterminateursassocies.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/AdobeStock_432422112-200x133.jpeg 200w, https://www.exterminateursassocies.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/AdobeStock_432422112-300x200.jpeg 300w, https://www.exterminateursassocies.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/AdobeStock_432422112-400x267.jpeg 400w, https://www.exterminateursassocies.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/AdobeStock_432422112-600x400.jpeg 600w, https://www.exterminateursassocies.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/AdobeStock_432422112-768x512.jpeg 768w, https://www.exterminateursassocies.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/AdobeStock_432422112-800x533.jpeg 800w, https://www.exterminateursassocies.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/AdobeStock_432422112-1024x683.jpeg 1024w, https://www.exterminateursassocies.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/AdobeStock_432422112-1200x800.jpeg 1200w, https://www.exterminateursassocies.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/AdobeStock_432422112-1536x1024.jpeg 1536w, https://www.exterminateursassocies.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/AdobeStock_432422112-scaled.jpeg 2560w" sizes="(max-width: 380px) 100vw, 380px" /></p>
<p>As you put everything back together and or in place, you will want to make sure you eliminate potential hiding places. Do one more check for cracks and crevices. Don&#8217;t store paper items and clothing on counters or the floor. You might want to consider sealing mattresses and furniture cushions in anti-bug covers or plastic.</p>
</div><div class="fusion-clearfix"></div></div></div></div></div><div class="fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-8 nonhundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling" style="--awb-border-radius-top-left:0px;--awb-border-radius-top-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-left:0px;--awb-flex-wrap:wrap;" ><div class="fusion-builder-row fusion-row"><div class="fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-7 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last" style="--awb-bg-size:cover;"><div class="fusion-column-wrapper fusion-column-has-shadow fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy"><div class="fusion-title title fusion-title-6 fusion-sep-none fusion-title-text fusion-title-size-two" style="--awb-margin-top-small:0px;--awb-margin-right-small:0px;--awb-margin-bottom-small:20px;--awb-margin-left-small:0px;"><h2 class="fusion-title-heading title-heading-left" style="margin:0;"><h2><strong>6. </strong><b>Monitor for Success </b></h2></h2></div><div class="fusion-text fusion-text-7"><p>After you have identified hiding places, thoroughly cleaned everything, and sealed up possible hiding places, you need to spend the next few weeks monitoring the results. A daily check of the areas where the infestations were the worse could help you identify an ongoing issue before it becomes a major problem once again.</p>
</div><div class="fusion-clearfix"></div></div></div></div></div><div class="fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-9 nonhundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling" style="--awb-border-radius-top-left:0px;--awb-border-radius-top-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-left:0px;--awb-flex-wrap:wrap;" ><div class="fusion-builder-row fusion-row"><div class="fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-8 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last" style="--awb-bg-size:cover;"><div class="fusion-column-wrapper fusion-column-has-shadow fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy"><div class="fusion-title title fusion-title-7 fusion-sep-none fusion-title-text fusion-title-size-two" style="--awb-margin-top-small:0px;--awb-margin-right-small:0px;--awb-margin-bottom-small:20px;--awb-margin-left-small:0px;"><h2 class="fusion-title-heading title-heading-left" style="margin:0;"><h2><strong>7.</strong> <b>Hire a Professional Exterminator</b></h2></h2></div><div class="fusion-text fusion-text-8"><p>Many times, the elimination of these annoying little bugs is too much for a layperson to handle. Bug extermination can be a tedious and time-consuming process when administered by someone who has little to no experience in dealing with bed-bug issues.</p>
<p>If problems persist after your initial efforts, that would be the right time to consult with a <a href="https://www.exterminateursassocies.com/en/bed-bug-extermination/">professional exterminator</a> like the Exterminateurs Associés. With the right knowledge base, experience, and chemicals, professional exterminators stand a much higher chance of success than you would, especially if your infestation were to be significant.</p>

<p>It is an insect without wings, of oval and flat shape, whose head is widened. Of brownish color, it measures up to 10 mm. The female produces 2 to 4 eggs per day (about 200 during her life). She deposits them in any location she considers well hidden. The <a href="https://www.exterminateursassocies.com/en/insect-identification/bed-bug-bed-bug-infestations-definition-of-a-bed-bug-what-is-a-bed-bug/">bed bug</a> feeds on human blood, which it collects through bites on different areas of the body. The small red spots can take up to 14 days to appear on the skin.</p>

<ul>
<li>Do you notice a corner of wallpaper peeling off in a room in your home? Quickly repair or remove it and then repaint.</li>
<li>Vacuum often, especially under beds and behind headboards. Take advantage of the opportunity to vacuum furniture fabrics (lift up the cushions!).</li>
<li>Cracks and fissures can occur between baseboards in walls, furniture, door and window frames. As soon as you notice them, seal them up!</li>
<li>Check often, in particular, the possible points of entry from the outside to the inside of the walls (entry of wiring, piping, utility equipment&#8230;) of your home and adjoining walls.</li>
<li>Wicker furniture (rattan) is particularly popular with bed bugs. It is advisable to clean them from time to time with water containing baking soda, lemon juice and vinegar.</li>
<li>It is not uncommon to find them behind or around decorative items (paintings, clock, mirrors, posters &#8230;).</li>
<li>Bed bugs can sometimes hide along the hems and between the folds of curtains and even under the brackets. They also like carpets and rugs that are no longer brand new.</li>
</ul>
<p>These insects and other unwanted guests enjoy dirt and clutter, so keep your home clean and tidy. <em>If you have a pet, check where they sleep too!</em></p>
</div><div class="fusion-text fusion-text-12"><h2>Be careful what you bring home</h2>
<ul>
<li>It is common to bring into a home new furniture and decorative accessories, used books, or items gleaned from junk sales and antique stores. Be careful with any items that are &#8220;second hand&#8221; or have been refurbished. Inspect them thoroughly on site or in a space away from your home. If you notice several white spots about 1 mm in size, they may be bed bug eggs.</li>
<li>If you have helped a friend or loved one move, check your vehicle if it was used to transport items and furniture before returning home.</li>
<li>You notice a sofa or mattress, which appears to be in good condition, that has been left out on the sidewalk. Better to leave it where it is!</li>
<li>When you return from a trip, thoroughly inspect everything you bring back. Do not place your suitcases on the bed or on the floor. Before checking, place them in the bath.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>These precautions not only protect you from bed bugs, they prevent them from spreading to your neighbors&#8217; homes.</strong></p>
</div><div class="fusion-text fusion-text-13"><h2>What equipment is needed to properly inspect a home?</h2>
<p>Bring a flashlight, a thin piece of plastic (an old credit card cut in half, for example) to access narrow spaces. You will also need a screwdriver to remove the current plates (after closing the electrical circuit) and disassemble some furniture. You will also need a bottle of rubbing alcohol, a window cleaner and several light-colored rags. If you notice reddish-brown spots when you rub, they may be bed bug droppings. After your household inspection, place used rags in plastic bags sealed with heavy duty tape and place in a trash can.</p>
</div><div class="fusion-text fusion-text-14"><h2>How to remove bed bugs in an apartment?</h2>
<p>If you only see a few bed bugs, do a thorough cleaning of your apartment following the tips mentioned above. Wash your bedding with hot water. In the event of a larger infestation, it is best not to attempt to solve the problem yourself; it is recommended to call in commercial extermination specialists. An exterminator specialized in pest eradication will visit the site to evaluate the level of infestation and apply solutions. He&#8217;ll have all the necessary training and experience to take charge of the problem and advise you in order to avoid a new infestation.</p>
